visionOS 2.5 update

Meta Spatial SDK version 0.6.0

The Meta Spatial SDK is a development toolkit that enables non-Unity, Kotlin-based mobile developers to create spatial applications for Meta Quest:

  • New Interaction SDK adds consistent hand/controller interactions for grabbing objects and interacting with panels

  • Added query filters, sorting capabilities, and DRM support for secure content display

  • Component XML now preferred over Kotlin for better performance and editor integration

Meta's Next-Gen Smart Glasses: New reports suggest Meta's next generation of XR glasses could be released later this year. Future Meta smart glasses, expected in 2026, might include facial recognition with always-on AI.

Apple's Future Headset and Glasses Development: Reports indicate Apple is actively developing a lighter "Vision Air" headset and augmented reality glasses to compete with Meta. Future Vision Pro iterations may use titanium for weight reduction and feature a new face sensor system for improved fit. Additionally, visionOS 3 is expected to introduce eye-based scrolling. Sources suggest Apple's AR glasses could rival Meta's offerings, with a potential release after the Vision Pro, possibly around 2027. CEO Tim Cook reportedly views AR glasses as a top priority.

Synchron's Brain-Computer Interface Integration: Synchron is reportedly on track to achieve the first native integration of a brain-computer interface with Apple's iPhone, iPad, and Vision Pro devices.

Google's Android XR Efforts and Smart Glasses: Google's I/O 2025 sessions will highlight Android XR and new user experiences. Speculation suggests Google may release its own Android XR glasses as early as 2026. It's also been noted that Gemini AI might require a wearable companion for Android XR to function fully, and Google Photos is preparing for Android XR spatial video support.

Samsung's XR Device Plans: Samsung is reportedly preparing to launch its "Project Moohan" XR headset in 2025, alongside "Haean" Android XR smart glasses. A new Samsung patent also illustrates potential UI navigation for their XR smart glasses using a Galaxy Ring and Watch. Samsung, along with Google, is aiming to compete with Meta and Apple in the XR and metaverse space.
